MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games), are without any doubt the most popular type of free MMO games in 2023.
In a typical MMORPG, each user has its own virtual alter-ego to wander through the online gaming world, complete quests, kill enemies and interact with other players: this way, the character will earn experience points, learn new skills and become stronger and stronger.

Most MMORPGs (often referred-to as "online role playing games") require the download of a game client, but there are also several browser-based RPG games.
Of course, games to download allow for a more in-depth gaming experience and can provide some of the most appreciated features of 2023 roleplaying online games, like an Open World (each player can explore freely the game's map and find new adventures or companions), a Sandbox environment (players can craft their own houses, grow vegetables and have a direct influence on the world) or, last but not least, awesome 3D graphics.

Since their first appearances in the early 2000s, a lot of online roleplaying games have been developed: most of them have a fantasy setting, but the need for innovations has lately brought to more diversity under this point of view, with some pretty good sci-fi, medieval or present-time games... you can even find hybrid titles with futuristic sci-fi weapons mixed with medieval\fantasy runes and enchantmented swords!

Another aspect you should really keep in mind when choosing a MMORPG in 2023 is its combat system: a long time ago, RPG games didn't really focus on PvP action (actually, there wasn't any PvP action at all until RPGs started becoming MMORPGs) and their only focus was the atmosphere and its ability to transport the player into a new reality.
This led to static, passive combat systems that made the fighting process a bit boring, not to mention the PvP parts (when present)!
In 2023, this aspect is changing rapidly and the most modern online role-playing games feature some pretty good combat systems that are able to compete even with pure action-based games.
